What does BHRT Cost?
Does Alberta Health Cover BHRT?
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is not covered under Alberta Public Health. If you have a health spending account, you can submit your receipts and be reimbursed for the consult and follow-up appointments, otherwise, it is an out-of-pocket expense.
What does a BHRT consult consist of?
Understanding your symptoms, and your lab work is the top priority of BHRT, you will receive an intake form that asks questions about your health history (it is a lengthy form) but is necessary to formulate a care plan specific to you.
How much is BHRT?
The first consult is $375, this includes a review of your lab work/hormone panel, 1-hour virtual appointment, and a written care plan that includes your lab values, reference values, and optimal values that we discuss and determine are optimal for you (it is very patient centered care).. The first follow-up is in 3 months and cost $175, thereafter, follow-up appointments are every 6 months, you receive the same treatment as you did in your initial consult. The hormones are formulated by a compounding pharmacy with a dose specific for you, they may be covered by your drug plan.
What are my other options?
HRT and BHRT are different therapies. HRT appointments with your family health care provider are covered under public health, whereas BHRT is an out-of-pocket expense. BHRT is made from plants (e.g yams, soy, and cactus); while traditional HRT is made from animals (e.g urine of pregnant mares). Both HRT and BHRT have to be prescribed.
