Could it be estrogen dominance or just not enough?
Estrogen is important in both men and women. It is pivotal in glucose and lipid homeostasis, it supports the immune system, bone health, cardiovascular health, fertility, and also brain function. However, estrogen can also be the cause of many illnesses that people experience, both acute and chronic. As we age, estrogen typically decreases, which leads to tissue degeneration and some of the effects of low estrogen begin to manifest. Because of life processes and/or exposure to agents (e.g foods we eat) that enhance estrogen, some people have an abundance of estrogen which also leads to numerous health issues. Too much and too little estrogen both have detrimental health consequences. When your hormones are out of balance people begin to experience a broad range of health problems or symptoms such as irritability, mood disorders, weight gain, insomnia, painful periods, and fatigue. Interestingly, there are estrogen receptors in nearly every organ, for example, they are in the bladder, bones, brain, breasts, esophagus, eyes, fat, stomach, immune cells, white blood cells, kidneys, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, muscles, thyroid, tonsils, trachea, and uterus. Estrogen obviously affects every system in the body when it is too high, and also when it is too low.
If you are wondering if the symptoms that you are experiencing may be related to estrogen, please discuss HRT with your family care provider, or, if you would like to try BHRT please contact me. Please note: BHRT appointments are not covered under health care; however, the medications/hormones are.
